Example: Completed Fiduciary Anchor
Fictional example. Show the expected quality standard: distinction between simulation and connection, both sides, and a reasoned judgment with action. Student: Birta, 17 years old, on a handball team and active in a Discord community about video games.
1. Comparison with the Human Anchor
In Step 1, I said that my team gives me something that no app can simulate: showing up tired and feeling that someone is relying on me anyway. The machine measured "engagement" and "connections" but did not capture this: belonging means that someone notices when you don't show up.
2. Honest Oracle
- Simulation vs. connection: The machine said Discord "builds strong connections". Some of it is true, but many "connections" there are connectivity (messages are delivered) rather than connection (someone shows up when the going gets tough). I distinguished between the two.
- Both sides: I was going to prove that the internet was worse. But when I was injured for two months and couldn't make it to practice, the Discord group kept me company. That was real support; I cannot reject it just to strengthen my argument.
- Hallucination: The machine referred to a "study showing a 40% increase in loneliness" with a precise year. I couldn't find it. I do not accept the figure as valid.
3. What Requires Friction to Survive?
| What frictionless connection provides | What only friction builds | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Companionship when I couldn't go out | Trust that someone is relying on me | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Access to people with the same interest | Being missed when I don't show up | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Support across distance | Shared sacrifice (showing up tired, keeping going) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| (Fill-in template table) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Conclusion: if all connections became frictionless, what keeps the team together would disappear: that belonging costs something, and that is why it means something.
4. Rejection
- "40% increase in loneliness" — rejected: hallucinated figure, could not find the source.
- "Discord builds the same connections as a team" — rejected as one-sided: it builds connectivity, sometimes connection, but not the same friction as showing up physically.
5. My Judgment and Responsibility
My judgment is this: frictionless connection undermines the resilience of communities when it REPLACES friction, but not when it is ADDED to it. Discord added to it when I could not show up; the danger is when it becomes an excuse to never show up. My step: I will show up to practice in the coming weeks even when tired, because it is the friction that builds trust. I bear responsibility for this judgment: it is mine.
